LEWIS CENTER, Ohio – The Capital University softball team wrapped up the 2025 season on Sunday afternoon with a 10-9 loss to Marietta before the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
The Comets conclude the season with a record of 13-22 overall and 6-11 in the OAC. Marietta finishes 20-15-1 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
GAME ONE
The Comets played from behind as Marietta scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Though, playing from behind, Cap got back on the board and even went in front 4-3 in the bottom of the second inning.
The runs for Capital came courtesy of a two-RBI single by
Reagan Irons, an RBI triple by
Kyleigh Kirby and a first-and-third play that scored Kirby.
Unfortunately for Cap, the lead was short lived as Marietta tied it in the next inning and then built a 10-4 lead by the top of the sixth.
Capital would not go quietly though, scoring four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Those runs were scored thanks to a stolen base by
Emma Sweetman, and three RBI singles by
Autumn Bridges,
Megan Parry and
Michelle Brumfield. One inning later, Capital would make it a one-run game on
Kyleigh Kirby's RBI single, but the momentum would halt there as Marietta hung on for the 10-9 win.
At the plate, Capital recorded 15 hits thanks to four from Kirby, two from Bridges and Sweetman and one each from Parry, Brumfield,
McKenzie Kennedy, Irons,
Keaura Shilling,
Isabel Sayre, and
Kelcie Schnitzler.
On the mound,
Alyssa Miller and
Addi Parker would combine for the full game, with Miller starting and ending the game and Parker pitching most of the middle innings. The duo combined for five strikeouts.
GAME TWO
With Capital trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the first inning, the game was halted due to weather. With the game not reaching official status, all stats and scores were nullified and the game was ruled a no contest.
NOTABLE NEWS
Kyleigh Kirby put together a season for the record books as her batting average of .504 marks just the fourth time in program history -- and first time in 25 years -- that a Capital player finished a season with a batting average above .500. Kirby joins Cassie Cunningham (.542 - 1998 and .516 - 2000) and Lora Vandenbark (.528 - 1994) as the only players in program history to break the .500 threshold for a single season batting average.
