MARIETTA, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team rounded out the 2025 season with a split on the road at Marietta College. The Comets won the opening game 6-3 before falling 8-5 in the nightcap.
The Comets conclude the season with a record of 15-25 overall and an OAC mark of 6-12. The Pioneers finish their season 18-20 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
Both the 15 wins overall and the six conference wins mark program highs within the
Scott Manahan era of Cap baseball.
GAME ONE
Capital fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but kept the game close before tying it at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. That run came courtesy of an RBI triple off the bat of
Ryne McKinney.
With the momentum, Capital scored two more in the top of the fifth thanks to RBIs by
Michael Andryszczyk and Kieran LaMarr. Despite the 3-1 lead, Marietta tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
That score would hold until the top of the ninth when Capital rallied for three runs on an RBI hit-by-pitch from
Ty Clifton, a wild pitch that scored
Grayson Gulley and an RBI single by
Robby Harrison. Those runs pushed Capital ahead 6-3 and allowed
Casey Wilkins to finish off a stellar relief job to earn the 6-3 win.
At the plate, the Comets had 12 hits -- two each from McKinney, Harrison,
Bryce Kyees, and Andryszcyk, and one a piece by
Charlie Colson, LaMarr, and Gulley.
On the mound, Trevor Woodward started on the mound and tossed five strong innings before being relieved by Wilkins. Casey picked up the final four innings and allowed just two hits and three walks to earn his third win of the year.
GAME TWO
In the second game, the contest cruised into the fourth inning scoreless before
Bryce Kyees broke the deadlock with an RBI single that scored
Robby Harrison, making it 1-0 Cap.
The Pioneers then took a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the fifth.
Capital pulled level in the next inning, thanks to another RBI from Kyees, this one coming on a groundout that scored
Ryne McKinney.
Marietta then answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to go up 5-2, before the Comets put three of their own on the board in the top of the seventh to tie it back up at 5-5. Those Comet runs came thanks to a two-RBI triple from
Robby Harrison and an RBI single from McKinney.
From there, the Pioneers scored three more in the bottom of the seventh to go up, 8-5, which proved to be the final score.
Capital recorded eight hits in the game – three from
Robby Harrison, two from
Ryne McKinney and one each from
Charlie Colson,
Kielan LaMarr and
Bryce Kyees.
William Furry started on the mound for the Comets, throwing 5.2 innings and finishing with five strikeouts, six hits, and five runs.
Ben Mohler threw a full inning of relief allowing three runs on three hits, ending with the loss.
Brian Young and
Jared Carpenter then combined for the other relief effort.
