UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The six-seed Capital University men's lacrosse team traveled to face three-seed John Carroll (9-7, 6-3 OAC) in the OAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday. Despite their best efforts, the Comets would fall in heartbreaking fashion by one goal, 12-11.
The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout, putting up identical scores for the first three quarters. It all started with four goals apiece in the first quarter with
Mason Spaulding scoring all four for the Purple and White. Next, the second quarter was 2-2, making it a 6-6 game at the half. Scoring for CU was
Noah Musick and
Mason Miller.
The pattern kept up in the third quarter as again the two sides stayed locked after scoring three each, making it 9-9 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Colton Woods would score two of the three in the third with Anthony Caurusone scoring the other. It would all come down to the fourth quarter where the Blue Streaks scored to take a two goal lead into the final minute-and-a-half following a goal from Spaulding. Cap cut it down to one with a score from
Charlie Howenstine with 27 seconds on the clock. The Comets would win the ensuing faceoff with a chance to tie the game and face overtime, but unfortunately they fell short, 12-11.
THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding scored five goals and one assist for six points with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. He finishes his career with 233 goals, just 15 shy of Brennan O'Callaghan's program record of 248.
Colton Woods would finish with two goals and one ground ball.
Mason Miller,
Anthony Carusone, and
Charlie Howenstine all scored once and assisted once. Carusone added a caused turnover as well.
Noah Musick scored once.
Freddy Noday and
Tyler Lieu went a combined 18-for-26 on faceoffs. Noday was 16-for-22 with 10 ground balls while Lieu was 2-for-4 with two ground balls.
Jacob Poole and
Eric Patterson both had one assist. Patterson added two caused turnovers and one ground ball while Poole picked up two ground balls.
On the defensive end, CU was led by
Gino Nave (2 CT, 2 GB),
Devin Flynn (1 CT, 3 GB),
Leelan Durham (3 GB), and
Max Schillig (1 GB).
Luc Kadlic (4-5) made 11 saves in the Capital cage while also grabbing three ground balls.
