Men’s Lax Runs Away with a Dub on the Road

WILMINGTON, Ohio – At long last, the Capital University (5-9, 3-4 OAC) men's lacrosse team took on Wilmington (4-11, 0-7 OAC) on Monday night, nearly two weeks after the originally scheduled game was postponed due to inclement weather in the Wilmington area. Despite the wait, the Comets still ran away with a win, taking down the Quakers 25-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Purple and White would get out to the lead quickly, scoring putting up 10 in just the first quarter to take an eight-goal lead at the first break, 10-2. Of those 10, Mason Miller and Mason Spaulding each scored three, with two of the other four coming from Jacob Poole, and the last two courtesy of Anthony Carusone and Max Schillig

CU would not slow down in the second quarter as they outscored the Quakers 8-1 to take an 18-3 advantage into the half. Miller added four more to his total while Spaulding scored two more. The last two came via Tyler Lieu and Christian Akins.

Cap went on to shut out Wilmington in the second half while scoring three in the third and four in the fourth to bring to final scoreline to 25-3. Kaison Durham had the first two in the third, with the last going to Max Schillig. In the fourth, it was another each for Miller, Carusone, and Akins alongside one from Evan Legner.

THE NUMBERS
Mason Miller led the Comets with eight goals and two assists for 10 points as well as three ground balls and one caused turnover – all career highs.

Mason Spaulding put up season highs in goals, assists, and points with five and three for eight, adding two ground balls too.

Anthony Carusone scored twice and assisted twice for a total of four points, also picking up two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Kaison Durham, Max Schillig, and Christian Akins all had identical statlines with two goals and one assist for three points alongside two ground balls. Two goals and two ground balls were also career highs for both Durham and Akins.

Jacob Poole put in two goals and picked up five ground balls with one caused turnover.

Evan Legner put up two points on one goal and one assist with two ground balls.

Tyler Lieu added a goal in addition to his faceoff duties. He went 11-for-13 on faceoffs with seven ground balls.

Also on the faceoff were Freddy Noday, Noah Musick, and Parker Leitelt. Noday went 9-for-11 with six ground balls. Musick was a perfect 6-for-6 with one ground ball. Leitelt went 0-for-1 with one ground ball.

Zen Kropp dished out two assists and picked up one ground ball.

Defensively, CU was led by Dylan Christopherson (3 CT, 2 GB), Nate Hubler (1 CT, 2 GB), Logan Ensign (1 CT, 2 GB), Wes Millman (1 CT, 1 GB), Devin Flynn (1 CT, 1 GB), Gino Nave (1 CT), Leelan Durham (2 GB), Mason Ridgway (2 GB), Eric Patterson (2 GB), Charlie Howenstine (2 GB), Ian Zaletel (1 GB), and Jackson Gantz (1 GB).

Luc Kadlic (3-3), Wyatt Stemler, and Preston Garibay split time in the Capital cage. Kadlic got the start and the winning decision, playing the first half and making three saves. Stemler and Garibay combined for the second half shutout, with Stemler playing the third quarter making one save, and Garibay coming in to close it out with two saves and one ground ball.

The Comets head to Alliance next to face off with Mount Union on Friday. That game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
