COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team (4-3, 0-0 OAC) came up on the wrong end of a close back-and-forth affair against Ohio Wesleyan (6-3, 0-0 NCAC) on Wednesday night, losing 17-16 in the final moments.
The Comets maintained a slim three-goal lead at the half, 9-6 after outscoring the Battling Bishops 4-3 in the first quarter and 5-3 in the second quarter.
Ava Vendetti and
Grace Osborn split the four first quarter goals evenly, with Osborn,
Heather Stoner,
Leah Leno, and
Andi Henry picking up assists. Osborn and Vendetti added one each in the second quarter, joined by Henry,
Brenna Todd, and
Amber Street, with Osborn adding two assists as well.
Unfortunately, the three-goal advantage was swiftly erased in the third quarter as OWU put up six compared to three for CU. Again it was Osborn and Vendetti putting up the goals in the quarter, with Osborn taking two and Vendetti netting the other, leaving it all-square after three, 12-12. The fourth quarter was as close as could be as the two sides traded scores and seemed destined for overtime. That was until Ohio Wesleyan went ahead with two minutes remaining 17-16. Despite winning the consequent draw control, the Purple and White were unable to even the score and forced to take a shot clock violation, leaving OWU to run out the clock after a successful clear.
