Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comets Take Down Marietta in 59-58 Thriller to Stay Perfect

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University women's basketball team was back at home on Saturday, Dec. 6 for their second Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game of the year.  Facing off against Marietta College, the Comets would win in dramatic fashion, holding on in the final seconds to earn a 59-58 victory.  Capital extends their win streak to begin the year, their record now standing at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in OAC play.  The Pioneers drop to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

No team would pull away in the first half, as heading into the break the score would be 26-24 in favor of Marietta.  Capital would hold the biggest lead of the first twenty minutes, which was five points with a little over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Comets would begin to find their groove offensively in the third quarter, shooting 5-7 from beyond the arc.  They would retake the lead just two minutes in and see their lead grow to as big as 12 points after a Samaree Perkins three point basket with just under three minutes remaining in the period.

Just when it seemed that Capital was pulling away, the Pioneers charged back and cut the lead to just three points heading into the final quarter of play.  The two teams would trade the lead back and forth for the majority of the quarter, with neither side able to pull away.  Trailing by one with two and half minutes to play, Perkins would come up clutch yet again, converting on a layup attempt to give the Comets a 59-58 lead.

The final two minutes of play was full of non-scoring action, including numerous challenges from both teams.  Marietta would have the final possession, with a chance to take the lead and seven seconds on the clock.  A driving game-winning shot attempt would miss the mark as time expired, allowing the Comets to secure their eighth straight victory.

Samaree Perkins continues to stuff the stat sheet, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds.  The senior would also add three assists and two blocks.

Also finishing with 17 points was Tahirah Ellis, which marks a new career high.  Ellis continues to make her presence felt on the defensive end, tallying both a block and a steal.

Kendall Spreen would round out the Comets who finished with double digit scoring, recording 11 points on 4-10 shooting from the field.
