COLUMBUS, Ohio - Coming into town on Tuesday, Nov. 25 was The College of Wooster for a midweek non-conference matchup with Capital. In a very closely contested ballgame, the Comets would escape with a hard earned 61-56 victory. With the win, Capital sees their record rise to 5-0 out of the gates for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, Wooster drops to 4-1.
Both teams would stand tall defensively in the first half, as the score at the midway point would be just 25-20 in favor of the Comets. This five point lead was the result of three pointers from
Kendall Spreen and
Julia Nash in the last two minutes of the period.
The Comets would have the edge to begin the third quarter, as
Samaree Perkins, who was held to just four points in the first half, would put six points on the board to stretch their lead to as big as 10 points at the halfway point of the quarter. The Fighting Scots would not back down, however, rattling off nine straight points to cut the deficit to just one.
Looking for a response to regain momentum, Capital would get just that with two quick buckets from
Kyah Ewing to get the lead back up to five with less than a minute left in the quarter. The freshman would finish with a season high nine points.
Once again Wooster would show their fight to begin the final quarter of play, taking a 44-42 lead just a minute and a half in. This lead would be short lived, as once again it would be Nash and Spreen teaming up for a pair of scores to retake a 47-44 advantage.
After a pair of free throws from
Kya Jordan, the Comets' lead would grow to as big as eight points in the quarter. Refusing to go away, the Fighting Scots would hang around and trail by just one with under 30 seconds to play. After a wild sequence of turnover trade-offs, Jordan would put the game on ice with four straight free throws, giving Capital the 61-56 victory.
Leading the offense was
Kendall Spreen, who recorded 11 points on 5-6 shooting from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc. The junior would also add five rebounds, one assist, and a block to conclude her day.
Samaree Perkins once again would finish with a double-double, grabbing a team high 11 rebounds along with 13 points.
Kya Jordan would also finish with 13 points, going a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe.
Protecting the paint all game long was
Tahirah Ellis, who recorded a career high four blocks. Ellis would also contribute on the glass, finishing with seven rebounds.
