COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team went 2-2 over the course of four matches at the 2024 Pam Briggs Classic, hosted at The Capital Center. The highlight of the weekend for the Comets proved to be junior libero
Abby Brunner crossing the 1,000 dig milestone in the second match on Friday evening. Brunner now sits at 1,038 digs after the weekend.
Capital now sits at 3-5 overall on the young season and will continue their homestand with a non-conference match vs. Oberlin on Wednesday, September 11th.
The weekend got started with a pair of losses at the hands of Hanover (3-1) and Franklin (3-2) Colleges, but the Comets responded with a flourish, sweeping past Westminster and Bethany both via 3-0 scorelines.
Against Hanover,
Simone Daniel and
Chloe Preocanin led the attack with 13 and 11 kills respectively.
Bryn Whitmer was the leading assister with 30 and the leading server with three aces. Daniel led the blocking with four and
Abby Brunner (23),
Sophia Sobota (13) and
Olivia Spillers (11) each hit double figures in digs.
In the Franklin match, Daniel again led the offense, finishing with 17 kills, while Sobota also reached double-digits with 10. Whitmer dished out 32 assists in that match.
Samaree Perkins led the way in blocking with three, while
Abby Brunner landed three aces in service. Brunner also scooped up 21 digs to lead all players.
On Saturday, Capital took care of Westminster rather soundly on the heels of a very balanced performance.
Sophia Sobota led the offense with 11 kills and she was followed by Preocanin with 8 and
Larissa Smith with six. Whitmer finished with 20 assists, while Brunner led in aces (2) and digs (19).
Olivia Spillers and
Samaree Perkins each landed two aces as well.
Against Bethany, Capital dominated in all facets of the match, brushing by the Bison with ease.
Samaree Perkins' eight kills led the way in that category. Whitmer set up 23 assists to guide the way, while Spillers and Whitmer tied for the team lead with three aces. Brunner finished with 18 digs to continue your ascent up the career totals in that category.
Larissa Smith and Perkins tied with three blocks each leading the front row defense.
The Comets will return to action on Wednesday as they will host Oberlin College in what will be the last of six straight home matches. First serve in that one is slated for 7 p.m.
