Men’s Soccer Fights to Draw with Franciscan

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team (0-0-2) took on Franciscan (2-0-1) in their home opener at Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday night, ultimately ending in a 2-2 draw after the Comets played with 10 men for much of the second half.

The Purple and White would pull ahead very early after being awarded a corner kick just after the first minute of the game had passed. Tony Epstein would send it through the box, eventually finding the foot of Devon Hess who deposited into the back of a largely open net to give CU a 1-0 lead. That would be the only score of the half as both teams struggled to capitalize on their limited chances.

The second half had quite a few fireworks, with a red card and three goals all occurring within the span of two minutes. It all started with the sending-off of Capital keeper Ethan Ogden in the 62nd minute following a foul in the box. Francsican would then score the ensuing penalty kick against replacement keeper Connor Sexton to tie it at one apiece. Not long thereafter, the Comets moved back into the lead after Hess had played a long pass forward to Jacob Deever who then pushed it on to Nico Voight for his first career goal, 2-1. Unfortunately, it didn't take the Barons more than 17 seconds to knot it up once again, 2-2.

Once things started to settle down again, Franciscan – now with a one-man advantage – forced attack after attack into the Cap's defensive half. However, CU stood strong and would not concede, even scrambling away for a few unsuccessful attempts at scoring themselves. Thus, in the end, the scoreline would stay 2-2.
