BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Capital University volleyball team swept two matches on day two of the Bengal Challenge hosted by Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. The Comets first defeated St. John Fisher 3-1 before sweeping Pitt-Bradford 3-0 in the final match.
Capital is now 7-8 on the year with two more non-conference matches left before commencing OAC play.
GAME ONE: Capital def. St. John Fisher, 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20)
The Comets were upended in the opening set, 25-19, but the team responded in force, fending off the Cardinals in the next three sets, edging their opposition by just two points in the second and third sets before pulling away for a five-point win in the final set.
The Comets again enjoyed a strong offensive performance, hitting a superior .185 hitting percentage thanks to 51 kills in the match. Capital also recorded the only five blocks of the match, thanks to
Samaree Perkins,
Simone Daniel, and
Larissa Smith.
In attack,
Sophia Sobota led the way with 13 kills, followed tightly by Daniel, Perkins, and
Chloe Preocanin with nine each.
At the service line, Capital landed five aces, thanks to three from Sobota and one each from Daniel and
Bryn Whitmer.
Whitmer guided the offense with 30 assists, supported by 13 assists from
Kenadee Winters.
Abby Brunner led the back row defense with a season-best 31 digs. She was followed by Sobota (13) and
Olivia Spillers (10).
GAME TWO: Capital def. Pitt-Bradford, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16)
The Comets ran away with the three sets vs. Pitt-Bradford, taking the three sets comfortably by nine or more points in each set.
The Comets offense found great success hitting a combined .218 over the match, landing 45 kills.
Larissa Smith was the leading attacker, finishing with 11 kills and a .304 percentage. She also added two solo blocks.
Chloe Preocanin (9),
Sophia Sobota (7), and
Ryann Bunyak were also efficient in attack for the Comets.
Delaney Conger chipped in four kills on a .375 clip in two sets of action.
Bryn Whitmer again guided the offense with 26 assists, while
Kenadee Winters added eight helpers.
At the service line, Capital served up five aces –
Abby Brunner with three and
Olivia Spillers and Whitmer with one each.
In defense, Brunner recorded 20 digs, followed by Spillers with 16 and Sobota with 10.
Makenna Sullivan finished with a career-high seven digs in her one set of play, while
Morgan Metzger also had a career-best six scoops.
Joining Smith in blocking was the combo of Sobota and Conger.
