DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon for a pair of mid-day games in which they fell via 3-2 and 3-0 scores. The opposition on the day was the hosts OWU and Albion of the MIAA.
Capital now sits at 4-7 overall on the season.
MATCH ONE: Ohio Wesleyan wins 3-2 (19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 33-31, 16-14)
After the Comets and Bishops traded sets, leading to Cap leading two sets to one, OWU forced a fifth set after outlasting an intense 33-31 fourth set scoreline.
In the ultimate fifth set, Capital won the battle to the first eight points, leading 8-4 at the court switch. From there, OWU got the first four points after the switch, knotting the score at eight before a Comet timeout. Out of the stoppage, OWU continued on the ascent, eventually grabbing the lead, forcing Capital to play from behind. Capital then responded by trading points with the Bishops, but ultimately fell short 16-14 at the final.
Offensively, Capital attacked the ball well throughout the match, being led by three players with double-digit kills –
Sophia Sobota (14),
Simone Daniel (12), and
Larissa Smith (11).
Bryn Whitmer was once again the driving force in setting up the offense, ending with 37 assists.
Kenadee Winters (7) and
Abby Brunner (7) also helped facilitate the play.
Brunner was the leader in terms of digs, finishing with 25.
Olivia Spillers (13), Sobota (10) and Whitmer (12) also hit double digits.
At the service line, Daniel led with three aces, while Sobota,
Samaree Perkins, Brunner and Spillers each ended with two aces each.
The Comets were active in blocking again as Smith led the way with four swats. Daniel and Perkins each ended with two, while
Chloe Preocanin got in on one.
MATCH TWO: Albion wins 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-22)
The second match of the day for the Comets proved to be a difficult one in which the team struggled to connect offensively for much of the match, despite a strong second set. In the first set, the Comets landed just two kills while committing 10 attack errors, setting themselves up for an uphill battle the rest of the way.
Overall, the Comets were led offensively by
Simone Daniel who landed nine kills and
Larissa Smith who connected on eight.
Bryn Whitmer led the way in assists (16) and aces (2).
Kenadee Winters also added six assists, while
Samaree Perkins had the team's other ace.
In blocking, Perkins was the leader there, connecting with five swats. Daniel and
Sophia Sobota each sent back two blocks as well.
Abby Brunner had 18 digs, while
Olivia Spillers (14) and Winters (10) each hit double digits as well.
