Spaulding Breaks Single-Season Scoring Record in Final Regular Season Game

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Mason Spaulding broke the Capital University men's lacrosse single season scoring record in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday night, reaching 68 goals overall after three against Muskingum. This alongside scoring from Ty Chase and Jacob Poole led the Comets to an 11-8 victory over the Muskies. The win improves Capital to 8-8 overall and 7-2 in the OAC. With the loss, the Muskies are now 9-8 overall and 3-6 in OAC league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got off to a hot start, striking first with a goal by Jake Belt within the first two minutes of game time. The rest of the goals wouldn't come so easy though, as it was a defensive focused game through much of the first half. Capital was able to capitalize in man-up situations, giving them a 4-1 lead going into the half.

The second half was full of action, with the Comets being able to find the back of the net five times in the third quarter alone. The Comets were able to build up a comfortable 9-3 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Muskies weren't done yet. Some early goals in that quarter gave Muskingum some momentum, but every time it seemed they were within reach Capital would strike back with a goal of their own. Some tough goals and well-timed faceoff wins by Tyler Lieu and Freddy Noday helped the Comets to secure their victory, with a final score of 11-8.

THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding led the Comets in their scoring efforts with three goals, followed by Ty Chase and Jacob Poole each with two.

Chase and Spaulding also led the Comets in assists, both garnering two.

Eric Patterson was relentless defensively, raking in 12 ground balls and causing three turnovers. James Howenstine also made his mark defensively forcing three turnovers.

Luke Kadlic protected the net well for the Comets, finishing the game with six saves.

UP NEXT
Going into the OAC tournament, the Comets were able to secure the third seed with their win tonight. Capital will host the sixth-seeded Marietta Pioneers at Bernlohr Stadium on April 27th, with the start time still to be determined.
