COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team hosted Ohio Wesleyan University at Huntington Park this afternoon for the inaugural 'Kaufman Kup' presented by Encova Insurance. Despite celebrating Capital President Dave Kaufman throughout the day, Capital baseball fell in both games via scores of 9-3 and 14-7.
The 'Kaufman Kup' was created with the match-up vs. Ohio Wesleyan due to President Kaufman's ties to both schools. Kaufman graduated from OWU and is now the President of Capital. In between his time at the two schools, Kaufman served as an executive with Encova Insurance – the 'Kaufman Kup's' presenting sponsor.
After today's results, the Comets are now 8-25 on the year, while OWU is 17-15.
In game one, the Comets offense scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but the three was not enough as OWU claimed the game by a final score of 9-3.
Capital's runs came courtesy of an RBI single from
Arnulfo Gonzalez and an RBI fielder's choice from
Michael Andryszczyk in the fourth inning and a
Ryne McKinney sac fly in the seventh.
All-in-all, Capital recorded four hits and three walks in the game.
Cade Anderson,
Connor Feeney, Gonzalez and
Jared Carpenter each had a hit, while Anderson walked twice and
Cole Boroff also drew a walk.
Noah Bromberg hurled game one, lasting six innings and surrendering four runs and two walks while striking out three.
Landon Kim and
Braden Lewis combined to toss the final frame.
In the second game, Capital got in an 11-0 hole by the mid point of the third inning, forcing an up-hill battle the rest of the way. Despite this, Capital scored six in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI from
Kielan LaMarr,
Connor Feeney,
Michael Andryszczyk,
Jonathan Mitchner, and two from
Ben Stevens.
OWU tacked on some more insurance through the middle part of the game, but Capital responded again with an RBI double from
Arnulfo Gonzalez in the bottom of the seventh making the final score 14-7.
Capital recorded eight hits in the nightcap – two each from Gonzalez and Stevens and one a piece from LaMarr,
Scott Moats, Mitchner, and
Ryne McKinney.
Tyler Sickles started on the mound and was relieved by
Ethan Pollack,
Drew Stitt,
Drew Pfundt,
Kaiden Patton, and
Colin Boldin.
