ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team shook off a sluggish third quarter to net 30 points in the fourth quarter to hold off a pesky Mount Union side on Saturday afternoon. By the final horn, Capital emerged on top via an 81-74 score.
The win improves Capital's record to 15-6 overall and 10-4 within the OAC conference. Mount Union drops to 7-14, 4-10 OAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cap found themselves in an 8-2 hole early on, but eventually got in a groove and embarked on a 12-0 run to take a 14-8 lead at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter. This run was spurred on by a pair of layups from
Samaree Perkins and was capped by a 3-pointer from
Kendall Spreen.
Now in front, Capital eventually held a 21-16 lead to start the second frame. In that stanza, the Comet lead grew to as many as 13 points at 34-21 thanks to a 3-pointer from
Jenna Horsley. A scoreless run across the final 3:42 of the first half by the Comets allowed the Purple Raiders to trim the lead to 38-29 by the halftime interval.
That slow end to the first half carried into the third period as Capital was out-scored 21-13 in the stanza. With the work to get back into the game, Mount even traded the lead with Capital on several occasions throughout the period. A couple of free throws from
Bri O'Connor allowed Cap to start the fourth quarter on top, 51-50.
In the final frame, the Comets got back on track and exploded for 30 points, led largely by the dominance of O'Connor. She ended the final period of play with 16 of her season-high 29 points and she also recorded two of her three assists in the stanza as well. By the final buzzer, Cap remained in front 81-74 to get back in the winning column.
THE NUMBERS
Bri O'Connor led all players with a season-high 29 points on 8-for-15 shooting overall. She was also good on 3-of-6 attempts from 3-point range and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. To round out her day, she led the team with five rebounds, and added three assists, two steals and a block.
Samaree Perkins continued her solid week with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She added four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Earlier this week, Perkins netted a season-high 19 points and also recorded her 500th career point in the collegiate game.
Jenna Horsley added nine points off the bench thanks to a perfect 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc.
Demi Brewer led the team with four assists and three steals to go with her eight points, four rebounds.
