TIFFIN, Ohio – The sixth-seeded Capital University men's basketball team went head-to-head with third-seeded Heidelberg in the first round of the OAC Tournament on Tuesday night. Despite a strong showing in the first half, the Comets would cough up the lead in the second half, ultimately leading to an 89-79 win for the Student Princes.
Capital's season comes to a close at 16-10 overall and 10-8 in the OAC.
Heidelberg will advance to play No. 2 seeded Mount Union in the OAC Semifinals, their record now 16-10 with a 11-7 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Across the early going, the Comets fought for separation and finally found that after a 9-4 run opened the score up to 20-13 in favor of the Purple and White. Despite the edge for Cap, Heidelberg closed quickly with six straight.
The Comets held steady and finished the first half on a 21-10 run to open up a 41-29 halftime lead.
Dom Moegerle and
McKane Finkenbine each poured in six points during the run to lead the way before a couple of late free throws gave Cap a boost heading to the locker room.
In the second half, Capital extended their lead to as many as 15 points thanks to a
Baden Forup layup that made the score 47-32. Unfortunately a dry spell for the Comets led to a tied score at 55-55 with 11:00 left to play.
From there, Capital briefly got back into it, but again Heidelberg caught some momentum and built out an 11-point lead at 76-65. That lead would extend to 13, but a 3-pointer from Moegerle near the end of regulation would make the final 89-79 in favor of the hosts.
