ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (6-0, 2-0 OAC) extended their win streak to six on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought win on the road at Mount Union (3-4, 0-2 OAC). The teams were practically neck-and-neck throughout the first three quarters, but the Comets were able to surge ahead in the fourth, leaving with a 57-52 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital got off to a strong start in the first quarter, opening with an 8-0 run through the first 4:53. However, Mount Union would make a comeback late in the quarter, hitting a layup at the buzzer to take a 15-14 lead into the quarter break. From then on, the Comets and the Purple Raiders remained neck-and-neck for the next two quarters with matching scores of 18-18 for the second and 7-7 for the third, leaving the game at 40-39 entering the final 10 minutes.
The Purple and White would finally start to sneak away in the fourth quarter thanks to 3-of-6 (50.0%) from three-point range and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. All-in-all CU would score 18 points and hold Mount Union to just 12 to secure the 57-52 victory.
THE NUMBERS
Capital's core five were responsible for nearly everything on the court in this one, playing a combined 182 of the 200 minutes and recording every single point, rebound, assist, block, and steal for the team.
Laney Murphy led all scorers with 19 points off of 5-of-10 shooting and 5-of-8 from deep, officially making her the 22nd member of Capital's 1000-point club as well as the program's 19th overall leading scorer. Additionally, she recovered seven rebounds with a career-high-tying three steals as well as one assist.
Bri O'Connor scored 15 points with six assists, six steals, and five rebounds.
Samaree Perkins pulled down a career-high-tying 15 rebounds, combining that with 11 points for her fourth double-double of the year. Additionally, she had one block and one steal.
Maddi Weiland would end up with seven points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Kya Jordan finished with five points with a career-high-tying four assists as well as two steals and one block.
