Women’s Hoops Starts OAC Play Off Strong at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (5-0, 1-0 OAC) started OAC play on the road at Heidelberg (0-5, 0-1 OAC) on Wednesday night. The Comets would dominate all the way through the first few minutes of the third quarter, swelling their lead to 32 at one point, cruising to a 75-62 victory in the end.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital got going quickly, starting the first quarter on an 11-3 run through the first 4:56 and ultimately outscoring Heidelberg 18-12 through the first ten minutes. The Comets kept the pressure on in the second quarter as they held the Student Princes scoreless for nearly seven minutes, forcing seven turnovers while going on a 16-0 run. All in all, the Purple and White would win the quarter 28-10 behind 10-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range, taking a 24-point lead into halftime, 46-22. 

CU would continue to cruise in the early going of the third quarter, holding Heidelberg without a field goal for the first five minutes of the period while partaking in a 9-1 run that allowed the lead to get up to 32. However, eventually the scoring slowed down and Heidelberg began to make it a bit more respectable for themselves. In the end, the Student Princes would outscore Cap 23-17 in the third and 17-12 in the fourth to bring the game to a close, 75-62 in favor of CU.

THE NUMBERS
Laney Murphy put up her first 20-point game of the season with a season-high 21 points off of 7-of-13 shooting, going 6-for-12 from deep, leaving her at 990 career points and eying a place in the 1000-point club. She also secured three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Samaree Perkins put up her third double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to surpass 500 for her career. Additionally, she had two assists and one steal.

Bri O'Connor also scored 13 points, with four assists, four steals, and two rebounds.

Jenna Horsley and Maddi Weiland both had six points. Weiland would also end up with six rebounds, five blocks, and one steal. Horsley added an assist.

Kya Jordan and Tahira Ellis both scored five points. Jordan added two points, two assists, and two steals while Ellis had an additional two rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Comets will head to Alliance on Saturday for their first OAC doubleheader of the season, with both teams taking on Mount Union. The women's game will tip off at 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
