Women’s Hoops Bounces Back with Win over Adrian

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Capital University women's basketball team (9-1, 3-0 OAC) got back on track on Monday with a win over Adrian (3-9, 2-1 MIAA) in the third place game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament hosted by DePauw. The Comets rode a strong first quarter to a 12-point advantage over the Bulldogs in the end, 73-61.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CU started off strong in the first quarter, putting up 25 points, led by Samaree Perkins (7 PTS), Laney Murphy (6 PTS), and Rani Thigpen (5 PTS). The Purple and White would force six turnovers on the defensive end, leading to nine points as well as ultimately holding Adrian to just 17 and taking an eight-point lead into the first break, 25-17.

Capital stayed steady in the second quarter, putting up 13 compared to Adrian's 11. Murphy added five points to her total, giving her 11 in the first half along with 10 from Perkins. Again, the CU's defense was stout, causing five more turnovers and increasing the lead to 10 points at the half, 38-28.

Adrian rebutted ever-so-slightly to start the second half in a high-scoring third quarter, dropping their deficit by one point, scoring 19 while the Comets scored 18. Murphy was once again the driver of the offense, with nine points added to her total. Despite being outscored, the third quarter was Cap's most efficient period shooting the ball, going 45.5% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range.

The Purple and White would coast in the fourth quarter, outscoring Adrian 17-14 in the final 10 minutes. Bri O'Connor led the team with seven points in the period as the Comets secured the 12-point victory, 73-61.

THE NUMBERS
Laney Murphy led the Comets with a game-high 22 points as she earned All-Tournament Team honors. Additionally she had one block and one steal.

Bri O'Connor scored 13 points with a team-high three assists as well as three rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Samaree Perkins put up 12 points an pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, also recording three steals, one block, and one assist.

Jenna Horsley scored nine points with one rebound, one block, and one steal.

Kya Jordan and Rani Thigpen each put up seven points. Jordan also recorded three rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal while Thigpen secured two steals and one rebound.

Maddi Weiland made for five rebounds with three points, two steals, and one assist.

Kenzie Weiland recorded two rebounds and one steal while Kendall Spreen also secured a rebound.

UP NEXT
Capital starts off the new calendar year on Saturday against the reigning OAC Regular Season Champions No. 17 Baldwin Wallace who the Comets went 1-1 against last season. That game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
