Men’s Basketball Prevails in OT Shootout

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team ran away from Ohio Northern in a 100-90 overtime shootout win on Saturday afternoon, securing their first conference win of the year.

With the result, Capital is 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the OAC, while ONU slips to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The 100-point score for the Comets marked the first triple-digit output by the Purple and White since a 102-49 win at Ohio Northern on January 18, 2019.

The Comets faced a difficult task through the first half as ONU brought high pressure and a fast paced offense that spurred the visitors to a 43-38 halftime lead. Undeterred by the halftime deficit, the Comets started the second half on the front foot, quickly tying the game at 48-48. From there, Cap went on a 22-10 run that ballooned a Comet lead out to as many as 12 points with 8:44 left to go in the second half. The Polar Bears responded with some of that sharp play seen in the first half to close the gap and eventually send the game to overtime with the game tied 84-84. Alex Eyink hit a layup with four seconds left in the game, leading to the extra stanza.

In overtime, both teams were in the double-bonus sending the offenses to the free throw line often. There, Capital converted seven freebies, while ONU managed to score just six points in the entire OT period. Capital's momentum was also boosted by a flurry of scoring from Alex Eyink who scored a layup, a jumper and a 3-pointer on back-to-back-to-back possessions for the Comets. Eventually, Capital escaped the high-scoring affair with the 100-90 win.
