WOOSTER, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 OAC) faced of with Wooster (2-3, 0-0 NCAC) on the road on Tuesday evening, earning their fourth straight win to start the season after a scoring explosion in the second half. The Comets would put up 31 points in the third quarter, including a 22-0 run to start off the second half, running away with a 75-48 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a tight one. Capital started off shooting a slow 5-for-19 (26.3%) in the first quarter but were still left with a three-point lead at the first break, 14-11. The Comets turned it up slightly to 7-for-19 (36.8%) and would add four more to their lead, taking a 31-24 advantage into halftime.
Laney Murphy was the leading scorer for CU at the half with nine points off of three made three-pointers. Close behind were
Bri O'Connor (8) and
Samaree Perkins (7).
The Purple and White would come out of the locker room on another level, with the offense exploding for a 22-0 run as the defense shut Wooster down for the first 5:36 of the third quarter. O'Connor and
Jenna Horsley led the run with nine points each, with all of Horsley's coming from behind the three-point line. All-in-all, Cap would put up 31 in the third, shooting 12-for-19 (63.2%) overall and 5-for-8 (62.5%) from deep, as they held the Scots to just eight and took a 30-point 62-32 lead into the final 10 minutes.
It was smooth sailing for CU from then on out with Wooster only inching back by three points thanks to a 16-13 fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to only 27 at 75-48 as the final buzzer sounded.
THE NUMBERS
Bri O'Connor clocked her third 20-point performance of the season, finishing with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block.
Samaree Perkins nearly put up another double-double with 16 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high-tying four steals, as well as two assists and one block.
Laney Murphy and
Jenna Horsley both scored nine points off of three three-pointers made. Murphy finished with an additional four rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Horsley also had one block.
Kya Jordan scored five points as well as four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Rani Thigpen finished with four points, one rebound, and one steal.
Kendall Spreen and
Kenzie Weiland had three points each as with Spreen securing two rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Weiland had one rebound and one steal.
Maddi Weiland made four steals and finished with three rebounds and two points.
Aly Ray and
Izzy Rodriguez also scored two points each.
Tahirah Ellis pulled down four rebounds with two assists and one steal.
Olivia Rouser got one rebound.

The Comets will take a short break for Thanksgiving and be back in action next Wednesday as they start their OAC schedule on the road at Heidelberg. Tipoff from Tiffin is set for 7:00 p.m.
