Women’s Basketball Grinds Out Win at Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 OAC) grinded out their third straight win to start the season on Wednesday, taking their first road contest of the year at Case Western Reserve (1-3, 0-0 UAA) by a score of 51-40. 

Despite a rough shooting night that included only 2-of-29 (6.9%) from three-point range and 15-for-68 (22.1%) overall, the Comets cashed in for 19 points at the free throw line, going 19-for-24 (79.2%). Additionally, the CU defense swarmed for 17 steals and a total of 27 turnovers for the Spartans. While both teams struggled to score points, the Purple and White would end up with enough for an 11-point advantage at the final buzzer.

THE NUMBERS
Bri O'Connor was ultimately the one to come to the rescue, scoring 16 of Capital's 22 first half points and driving the offense throughout the game. She finished with 24 – her third straight 20+-point game – as well as seven steals, five rebounds, two assists, and one block.

Samaree Perkins put up her second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 rebounds, 13 points, and one steal.

Laney Murphy finished with seven points as well as four rebounds, and one steal. 

Kya Jordan scored three points, pulling down four boards, and collecting four steals.

Rani Thigpen and Tahirah Ellis recorded two points and one steal apiece. Ellis also grabbed two rebounds with one block, while Thigpen pulled down one board. 

Maddi Weiland secured seven rebounds as well as two steals and one assist.

Kendall Spreen pulled down three rebounds. Jenna Horsley also got a board.

The Comets' road stint continues next Tuesday, November 26th, as they head to Wooster for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff with the Scots.
