WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University football team traveled to Otterbein University on Saturday afternoon for the annual Battle for the Oar which they looked to defend this season. Unfortunately, several offensive miscues led to a 39-10 loss for the Comets, who drop to 0-7 on the year. The Cardinals are now 1-6.
Capital's opening drive appeared promising until a fumble turned the ball over, leading to Otterbein's first score of the game. Then, the next drive appeared to start well before an interception led to another Cardinal score, making it 12-0 after failed PAT tries.
The Comets then responded to start the second quarter with a solid drive that saw
Ben Owens wheel around for a three-yard score, and with
Tyler Terrell's extra point, made it 12-7.
Another interception doomed the Comets on their possession, as this time, the pick was returned for a touchdown.
As time expired in the first half,
Tyler Terrell connected on his fourth field goal of the season, a 24-yarder to bring the halftime score to 19-10.
Unfortunately for Capital, the second half could not see the offense get going as the passing game threw three more interceptions.
The Comet defense did force three fumble turnovers in the third quarter as
Preston Hannika recovered a muffed punt by the Cardinals,
Jesse Foster had a strip sack on the Otterbein quarterback and
Cyrus Burden forced another fumble two drives later.
