COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University Comets won 3-0 in dominant fashion over the Kenyon College Owls, with
Larissa Smith reaching 500 career kills and
Bryn Whitmer securing her 1000th career assist as only a sophomore serving as the highlights of an exciting evening for the Purple and White. The Comets hit a season high .353 percent, supported by solid defense with 8 blocks as a group. The convincing win boosts the Comets to 8-9 on the season and drops the Owls to 7-12.
The first set started off close. Some back and forth blows led to a score of 7-7 before a couple of good blocks and a handful of quality serves from
Abby Brunner set the Comets off on an 8-1 run, which was the turning point of the set. Capital came out of the first set on top, winning 25-16. The second set started off strong for the Comets as they kept their momentum from the first set. Despite this, Kenyon rallied back to keep the score tight early on.
Larissa Smith secured her 500th kill to put the Comets up 6-5, setting up a 5-0 run in which three of the points were aces by Brunner. After a timeout by Kenyon, the Comets continued their run to 8-0 before they were finally stopped. Just before the end of the set,
Bryn Whitmer set up her 1000th assist on a kill from
Larissa Smith. This allowed the Comets to dominate set two, winning 25-15.
The third set was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Every time the Comets wanted to pull away, Kenyon was able to keep themselves in the set. That is until Capital pulled away on a 5-1 run to put them up 18-13, forcing another Kenyon timeout. The Comets extended their run to 8-1 and despite a good effort from the Owls, they won the set 25-18, securing the match 3-0.
