MARIETTA, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (14-6, 9-4 OAC) was on the road on Wednesday night, taking part in a midweek matchup with Marietta (15-5, 10-3 OAC). It would be a fairly significant battle – with the two teams tied for the third-seed in the OAC going in – but unfortunately, the Comets would be on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the end, the game going 80-75 in favor of the hosts.
Things started out fairly even as the sides were separated by just three points at the end of the first quarter, Marietta up 19-16. A poor second quarter for CU shooting-wise allowed the Pioneers to pull away. Cap was only able to put up six points in comparison to MC's 22, leaving the Purple and White in quite the hole at halftime, 41-22.
The tide turned at the start of the second half as Capital put together a 16-5 run to get the deficit back down to single digits. All-in-all the Comets would outscore Marietta 24-8 in the third quarter and close the gap to one possession at 49-46 before the final break. This set up a fight to the finish as a back-and-forth battle ensued until the final two minutes. With CU being forced to foul, Marietta would make enough free throws to escape with an 80-75 final score.
