Women’s Basketball Takes Down No. 23 BW

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (14-5, 9-3 OAC) bounced back big time on Saturday, battling out a huge win against No. 23 ranked Baldwin Wallace (15-4, 11-1 OAC). The Comets would not only claim their first victory over the Yellow Jackets since January 9th, 2016 – ending a 16-game losing streak – but also hand the OAC-leaders their first conference loss of the season. And CU did so with a strong showing, having led for 38:33 (96.4%) of the game, and finishing with a 72-64 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Samaree Perkins got Capital started by putting up the team's first nine points of the game. When the rest of the Comets joined in, they shot 7-for-13 (53.9%) as a collective and took an early nine-point lead, 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Baldwin Wallace would start to push back in the second, taking the difference down to just four about halfway through the quarter. However, Cap was committed to staying ahead and kept BW at bay to take a 37-31 advantage into halftime.

The tide seemed to take a turn at the start of the second half as the Yellow Jackets continued to eat into the deficit and ultimately get it down to just one in the first part of the period. Once again, Capital put together a response and salvaged a slim 52-48 lead going into the last quarter break.

Free throws were the key for the Comets when it came to finishing the game. With only two made field goals, 15 of CU's 20 fourth quarter points came via foul shots. The Purple and White put in 15-of-18 (83.3%) attempts from the charity stripe as they ended the game up eight points, 72-64.

THE NUMBERS
Samaree Perkins and Bri O'Connor led all scorers with 18 points each. O'Connor added four steals, four rebounds, and two assists to her statline. Perkins pulled down seven boards and made one steal.

Close behind was Laney Murphy with 17 points and one rebound.

Demi Brewer put up 10 points with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Maddi Weiland was Cap's leading rebounder with nine boards. She also had three steals, one block and one assist.

Kendall Spreen saw extended minutes due to CU foul trouble, stepping up especially on the defensive end. She scored five points with two rebounds and one assist.
