COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team opened up the 2023 edition of the Pam Briggs Classic with a 3-0 loss to Bethany College on Friday evening.
The Comets (2-4) dropped the sets in order 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17. The Bison improved to 4-1 with the win.
The Comets struggled offensively in the first set, but grew in their efficiency in the second and third sets, eventually hitting a .173 percentage for the match. The difference proved to be offensive opportunities as Bethany amassed 45 kills on 114 attacks, while Cap managed just 29 kills on 98 swings.
THE NUMBERS
Offensively,
Larissa Smith led the Comets with seven kills. She was followed closely by
Simone Daniel who had six kills on a quality .357 hitting percentage.
Bryn Whitmer once again guided the offense, totaling 21 assists. Whitmer also accounted for Capital's lone service ace of the night.
Defensively, both Daniel and
Samaree Perkins recorded solo blocks, while Smith, Daniel, Perkins and Whitmer collected a handful of block assists.
Abby Brunner had a team-high 18 digs, while Whitmer scooped up eight digs.
Olivia Spillers chipped in seven digs.
NOTABLE
Abby Brunner eclipsed the 500-dig milestone this season, cropping the mark in tonight's contest. She now has 514 digs to her name early in her sophomore season.
