COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's tennis team took advantage of Columbus' first 80-degree day of the year on Wednesday, playing host to Shawnee State in an outdoor match at Wolfe Park. In the end, it was not the Comets day, narrowly escaping a shutout thanks to
Brady Wink's tiebreaker win in sixth singles.
Capital sits at 7-6 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The day started slow as the Comets dropped all three doubles matches. The first doubles duo of
Thomas Secrist and
Colin Welch was defeated 8-1. Second doubles was a shootout but
Spencer Surles and
Brady Wink ended up on the wrong end, 8-6. Shawnee State secured their third point in third doubles taking down
Jackson Havel and
Jesse Stevens 8-3.
Capital's struggles continued in the singles matches, losing the first five. The only saving grace of the day came from the freshman Wink who won his first set 6-2, lost his second 6-1, and edged out his opponent 10-7 in the tiebreak. The other singles scores are as follows: Secrist (L: 6-0, 6-0), Surles (L: 6-3, 6-0), Welch (L: 6-0, 6-3), Stevens (L: 6-2, 6-2), and Havel (L: 6-2, 6-0).
