COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team took the field for a midafternoon doubleheader on Monday, hosting Heidelberg at Clowson Field. It was a rough day at the plate for the Comets as the Student Princes took both games, 4-0, 8-1.
Capital now sits at 4-6 on the season, starting OAC play at 0-2.
Heidelberg moves to 12-13, 2-2 in the conference.
Game one was a pitchers duel for the most part, remaining scoreless until the sixth inning.
Megan Mlinaric got the nod and went 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. She was backed up by
Alyssa Zolman who went the rest of the way. Mlinaric is hit with the loss (1-1). Heidelberg broke the scoreless tie in the sixth by putting up three runs and then added another in the seventh to bring the game to a 4-0 final scoreline.
Game two was headed up by
Brianna Shearer who pitched six innings, striking out three.
Krislyn Bayles provided relief for the seventh inning. Shearer is slated with the loss (2-3). The tides looked as if they might turn in the second game, despite Heidelberg taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Capital responded by plating one of their own in the bottom half of the frame, coming via a single up the middle by Mlinaric that drove in
Lexie Leggett. Unfortunately that would be the only run of the day for the Comets, being shutout the rest of the way. Heidelberg would score twice more in the fifth inning, followed with five runs in the seventh to bring the game to a close at 8-1.
