Baseball Drops a Pair to Otterbein

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On an overcast and chilly afternoon, the Capital University baseball team couldn't quite get their bats hot at Clowson Field as they dropped a doubleheader to Otterbein University on Sunday.

The Cardinals took game on 13-4 before sealing the sweep with a 4-2 decision in game two.

Overall, Capital slides back to 4-13 (0-4 OAC) and Otterbein improves to 16-6 (2-2).

GAME ONE: Otterbein wins 13-4
The Comets got four runs on the board and scattered them through the bottom of the second, bottom of the fifth and bottom of the eighth innings.

First in the second inning, Kielan LaMarr drilled a double to the fence in left field that allowed Tristan Burns to score from second.

In the fifth inning, EJ Santana lofted a sacrifice fly to left center that scored Reagan Burch from third.

In the eighth, Cap got two, thanks to a sac fly from LaMarr and a single by Logan White. Ryne McKinney and Burns were the run scorers in the inning.

Kyle Bowles started on the mound for Cap and threw six full innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs (five earned). Adam Frump and Brennon Newell combined for the three relief innings and scattered six hits and another seven runs between them. Bowles and Frump each struckout two Cardinals.

GAME TWO: Otterbein wins 4-2
The Comets were met by a stellar pitching performance from Jackson Peloquin as the right-hander threw a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning before running into trouble.

In the ninth, a walk from Tristan Burns followed up by singles from EJ Santana and Ryne McKinney loaded the bases. A run from Burns made the game 4-1 as Ty Clifton hit into a double play. Then, Logan White reached on an error that enabled Santana to score from third, bringing the Comets to within one. Unfortunately, reliever Braydon McCloskey slammed the door shut on Capital, earning his fourth save of the year.

Capital had great pitching in the second game with Curtis Clark throwing four full innings (5 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks), Casey Wilkins tossing two strong innings (1 H, 2 Ks), Tyler Sickles throwing lights out for two (1 H, 4 Ks), and Garrett Montgomery taking the final frame (2 H, 1 ER, 1 K).

UP NEXT
Capital will face a tight turnaround as they hit the road for a non-conference single game at Ohio Christian on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., but the Tuesday weather forecast will surely force the game into question. More information if a decision is made will be shared on athletics.capital.edu.
