COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team took the field at Bernlohr Stadium for the final time in the 2023 regular season, squaring off with Baldwin Wallace. It was a day that is always bittersweet as it was Senior Day for the Comets with seniors
Dylan Smith,
Haleigh McPhillips, and
Skyla Caito, and well as graduate student
Luci Kanowsky, were honored in a ceremony before the game. Everyone got in on the action with all four seniors scoring a goal in Cap's 22-9 win over BW.
Capital moves to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 in the OAC. The Comets control the second-seed in the conference tournament heading into the last game of the season on Saturday, April 22.
Baldwin Wallace drops to 3-10, 1-3 in the conference.
HUGE DAY FOR HIGHLIGHTS
It was a game to remember for the Comets with milestones and records seemingly falling by the wayside for the Comets' front three:
Luci Kanowsky,
Grace Osborn, and
Julia Foresi.
Foresi recorded her 100th career point at 14:17 in the first quarter with her second assist of the day. With two goals and four assists for a total of six points, she currently sits at 104.
Kanowsky scored her 229th career goal with her third of the day at the 3:37 mark, officially leaving her standing alone as Capital's all-time leading scorer, passing Kara Hines who held the old mark of 228. Kanowsky would finish with four goals, putting her career total at 230.
Finally, Osborn followed with her fifth goal of the day with 7:22 left in the second quarter, and the 200th of her career in just her sophomore year. She becomes the fourth Comet to cross the 200 goal mark following Kanowsky (230), Hines (228), and Kat Walton (227). After seven goals in the game, she sits at 202.
HOW IT HAPPENED
As per usual, the Comets started hot and scored the first five goals of the game in under five minutes. It was a combination of
Luci Kanowsky (2),
Grace Osborn (2), and
Dylan Smith securing the early lead for Capital;
Julia Foresi assisted on the first four. Cap would add six more enroute to an 11-4 quarter, accounted for again by Osborn (2), Kanowsky (2), and Smith with Foresi joining the scoreline as well. The Comets outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-1 in the second quarter to take a 17-5 lead – as well as a now-running clock – into halftime.
Andi Henry and Foresi added woman-up goals to go alongside two apiece from
Skyla Caito and Osborn, Caito's coming in back-to-back fashion about 14 seconds apart.
Capital cruised in the second half as they began to slow down, eat up the clock, and try to get everyone involved. The third quarter was a 2-2 split between the squads. Henry added her second woman-up goal of the afternoon and Midnight got in on the scoring action as well. The fourth quarter held some fun goals for Capital. First,
Heather Stoner scored her second of the season. Next, it was Osborn who got a draw control and took it straight to the net on an absolute tear. Finally, senior
Haleigh McPhillips came forth from the defensive line to score her first of the season, putting all four seniors on the scoresheet. It was a great way to end a successful 22-9 Senior Day.
