COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team met Marietta on the field of Bernlohr Stadium Wednesday night for their second-to-last home game of the regular season. In the end it was all Comets, achieving a running clock before the end of the first quarter and powering past the Pioneers, 20-5.
Capital moves to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in the OAC.
Marietta falls to 7-5, 1-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets came out firing on all cylinders and jumped ahead 3-0 before even a minute had elapsed in the game.
Grace Osborn got the party started, taking the opening draw right down the field and putting it in the back of the net.
Luci Kanowsky added her two cents – or two goals for that matter – shortly thereafter courtesy of assists by
Julia Foresi and Osborn.
Skyla Caito scored her third of the season a few minutes later to bring the game to 4-0, followed by Foresi for 5-0. Osborn would have a hand in every goal for the remainder of the quarter, scoring three of her own and dishing two to
Andi Henry. With just over 2:30 left in the first quarter, Capital held the 10-goal advantage necessary to keep the clock rolling continuously. The period came to a close at 10-0.
The pace of play grinded to a halt in the second quarter. With a 10-0 lead in hand, the Comets were determined to eat up as much clock as possible. As a side-effect of this, very few shots were taken on the offensive end, the vast majority of which did not make it through. This resulted in an unusual scoreline for the second quarter as each team only scored one goal, Capital's coming via
Andi Henry, and CU saw an 11-1 advantage at the half.
That fire seen at the start reignited in the third quarter with the Purple and White putting in five more before the halfway point. The scores came from Osborn (3), Henry, Kanowsky, and Caito, all unassisted except for Caito's which came from Foresi. Marietta added two to stop the run.
Brenna Todd finished the third quarter in style, scoring her first career goal with an assist from
Heather Stoner to put the Comets up 17-3.
The final fifteen minutes were mainly a waiting game. With the game firmly in hand, the Comets slowed their pace once again and tried to keep the clock rolling, adding three goals in the process to cancel out the two scored by the other side. These were netted by Capital's typical front three: Osborn, Kanowsky, and Henry. With a few passes around the offensive zone, CU consumed what was left of the clock and claimed their 20-5 victory.
