OBERLIN, Ohio – The Capital University softball team headed up to Oberlin College this afternoon to take on the Yeowomen and finished with 10 runs in both games to complete the sweep, 10-1 and 10-9. The doubleheader sweep was the Comets' second of the season as they also took both games off of Olivet earlier this year.
The Comets overall record improves to 7-11 while Oberlin slides back to 7-17.
Lexie Leggett continued her insane hot-streak from the plate hitting three home runs in the two-game set today. Over the course of the past seven games, Leggett has hit eight home runs, bringing her season total to 10 round-trippers.
GAME ONE: Capital wins 10-1
The Comets got going early and finished the game with a flourish as Capital put up five runs across the first three innings and then five more in the top of the seventh to seal a 10-1 win.
In the first inning, Cap got two runs thanks to a pair of RBI groundouts by
Lexie Leggett and
Krislyn Bayles.
In the second, the Comets doubled their lead to 4-0 as
Alyssa Zolman and
Reagan Irons pulled off a double steal, plating the first run and then
Kyleigh Kirby singled home Zolman for the second run.
Capital extended their lead with a single run in the top of the third inning as
Lexie Leggett clubbed a solo homer to left center.
Oberlin got a single run back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but nothing was enough to stop the Comets five-run seventh inning to seal the deal.
In that seventh inning,
Kyleigh Kirby singled home
McKayla Durr to get things going. Then, Kirby stole second and a throwing error allowed
Emma Sweetman to score from third. Soon after, Kirby sprinted home on a wild pitch and the icing on the cake was
Emma Gant's two-RBI double to right field that scored
Chandler Young and
Lexie Leggett.
Capital got a strong complete game performance from
Brianna Shearer on the pitching rubber as the senior threw all seven innings and allowed eight hits for just one run. She struck out six hitters on her 80 pitches thrown. She now moves to 3-4 in record on the season.
GAME TWO: Capital wins 10-9
Again the Comets went ahead early in game two, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning. There, Cap ran into some trouble, but again a strong finish led Cap to a 10-9 win over the Yeowomen.
In the first inning,
Lexie Leggett smacked yet another home run, putting Cap ahead 1-0. She was followed up by a two-run home run by
Kyleigh Kirby in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the third, Oberlin struck back for four runs, going ahead 4-3.
Undaunted,
Krislyn Bayles helped her own cause by tagging another long ball for the Comets. Bayles' home run was a two-run shot that also scored Leggett. The home run was the second of her career.
The next inning, Oberlin re-took the lead at 6-5, but Capital had a solid top of the sixth inning, pushing four runs across that put them ahead 9-6. Those runs came from an RBI single by
Liz Stonerock, an RBI sac bunt from
Emma Sweetman, and a two-RBI double by
Emma Gant.
With some cushion on the lead, Capital was tested again in the bottom of the sixth, allowing a single run to lead just 9-7.
However, some much-needed insurance was added in the top of the seventh as Capital went yard yet again, thanks to none other than
Lexie Leggett who's solo shot to right center gave Cap the eventual winning run as Oberlin scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting at 10-9.
A trio of pitchers worked for the Comets as
Krislyn Bayles started and lasted three innings (5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB). She was followed by
Kyleigh Kirby who tossed a full inning and allowed two hits and two unearned runs.
Jessica Workman worked the final three frames, scattering six hits and three runs to collect the win.
