COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team returned to the turf of Bernlohr Stadium after a long 31 day hiatus away from home. The opponent awaiting them was none other than long-time conference rival Mount Union; a team that the Comets had only conquered once before in program history, last year. It was a close contest throughout but Capital was always just one step behind – always tying but never leading – and Mount Union pulled away in the final minutes, 19-14.
Capital is now 4-4 on the season, 2-1 in the OAC.
Mount Union moves to 7-1 and 3-0 in the conference.
KANOWSKY CROSSES 300 POINT MARK
A high point in the game came at the 9:24 mark in the first quarter as graduate student
Luci Kanowsky scored Capital's first goal of the game. Not only did it get the Comets on the board, but it also marked Kanowsky reaching the milestone of 300 career points, a feat not many have accomplished. She joins former teammates
Brooke Delara (389) and Kathryn Walton (302) as just the third player in program history to reach that threshold of 300.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets started slow, dropping behind 3-0 in the first five minutes. The aforementioned Kanowsky goal got Capital on the board at the 9:24 mark and was followed by
Grace Osborn's first of eight on the day, Mount Union would add two more around the midpoint of the first quarter but the Comets responded by finishing the quarter strong with three straight scores via Osborn, Kanowsky, and
Ava Vendetti. The back-and-forth rhythm would continue almost like clockwork in the second quarter with the teams trading up to two goals at a time, and ending with Mount Union adding six goals and the Comets coming in behind with four. At the halfway point, it was the Purple Raiders up by two, 11-9.
Mount Union would add two more at the top of the second half to take a four-goal advantage. This was quickly wiped away as Capital quickly fired in four goals of their own to tie it up. It was an even spread of Osborn, Kanowsky,
Julia Foresi, and
Andi Henry to complete the comeback effort, 13-13. The teams then traded scores again with the Purple Raiders pulling ahead by one and the Comets closing the gap. Unfortunately, that was the last goal of the day for Capital and Mount Union moved ahead for a final time, adding one more in the third and four in the fourth quarter to close out the game, 19-14.
