CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – For the second time this season, the Capital University softball team split a doubleheader, making their overall record 2-2. This time, the split came on the road to Ohio Christian University.
The Comets fell in game one 6-1 before rallying for a 9-5 game two win.
GAME ONE: OCU wins 6-1
The Comets struggled to get much offense going in the first game, tallying just five hits across the game. However, the team's lone run came on a solo home run from freshman
Kyleigh Kirby in the top of the third inning. The homer was Kirby's first as a collegian and put Cap level 1-1 at the time.
Unfortunately from there, the Comets surrendered runs in each of the next four innings to drop the end result.
In addition to Kirby's homer,
Emma Sweetman collected two hits and
Tiffany Zuelzke and
Lexie Leggett had baseknocks. Leggett's hit went for a double. For Sweetman, the pair of hits marked the first two of her Capital career.
Brianna Shearer took the rubber and pitched a complete game, surrendering four earned runs on 11 hits. However, Shearer did strike out five batters.
GAME TWO: CAP wins 9-5
The Comets had a much better offensive display in the second game, slugging out 17 hits, five of which went for extra bases.
Megan Mlinaric,
Kyleigh Kirby (2) and
Karri Albertini all hit doubles, while
Lexie Leggett launched her second home run of the season.
After an early set-back, Capital got on the board with four runs in the top of the second inning. Kirby doubled home
Tabi Bailey before scoring on Albertini's RBI double. Albertini then scored a few batters later on
Tiffany Zuelzke's RBI single.
Autumn Bridges then scored as Leggett reached safely on an error.
Ohio Christian then hit a two-run home run in the third to close the gap, however, Leggett responded with a two-run homer of her own in the fourth to score herself and Bridges. The fourth also yielded another run for the Comets as Kirby's RBI double scored Mlinaric.
In the seventh, Capital tacked on two insurance runs as Leggett singled home
Reagan Irons and then Mlinaric singled home
Hannah St. Clair.
Alyssa Zolman twirled a solid game in her first collegiate pitching appearance. Zolman went the distance and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks. She struck out four as well enroute to earning the win.
