Men’s Lacrosse Flies Past Transylvania for Fourth Straight Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Another gorgeous Wednesday afternoon day at Bernlohr Stadium was met with a high-efficiency performance from the Capital University men's lacrosse team as the Comets flew past Transylvania 18-10.

The Comets have now won four straight games and have scored 18 or more goals in each of those games. In the four wins, Capital has rattled home 82 goals. The team is now 4-2 on the year.

Transylvania slips to 1-6 on their season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets blew away the Pioneers early and often, scoring 10 unanswered goals in the first quarter alone to establish full ownership of the result right from the get go.

Of those 10 goals, Capital's leading scorer Mason Spaulding deposited five, including a man-down goal for his third of the day.

Additional goals to Spaulding's five were courtesy of Jacob Poole, Charlie Howenstine, Jake Belt (2) and Max Schillig. Howenstine recorded three assists, while Schillig and Nathan Montgomery had one assist apiece.

After the 10-0 lead early on, the Comets took their foot off the gas and eventually let the Pioneers close the gap to 11-5 midway through the second quarter. However, goals from Spaulding and Aiden Manning just before the halftime break re-established control for the Comets.

In the third and fourth quarters, Capital again kept their foot off the gas, cruising to victory. Insurance goals were scored by Spaulding, Montgomery, Schillig, Poole and Manning.

THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding, who scored 20 goals last week alone, netted seven more today. His second goal of the day marked his 100th career point in the Purple and White, making him just the seventh player in program history to eclipse the milestone. On the season, he has now scored 31 goals, on an insane 60.8% conversion rate.

Jake Belt netted three times today, bringing his season tally to 10 goals.

Jacob Poole, Aiden Manning and Max Schillig each found nylon twice. Nathan Montgomery and Charlie Howenstine scored once each.

Howenstine led the assist game, dishing out four helpers – the third time he has done so this season. He now leads the team with 16 assists.

Montgomery, Poole, Schillig and Brenden Pelton each had one assist.

On defense, James Howenstine and Gino Nave wreaked the most havoc, each causing three Pioneer turnovers. Dom Rocco and Spaulding added two disruptions each.

Nave was also the busiest on the field in the ground ball department, picking up seven loose balls – his third game this season with seven or more pick-ups.

Austin Yanichko scooped up a career-high six loose balls, while Sam McInturf, Freddy Noday, and Arnold Fitzharris had four each.

McInturf was solid in the goal as well, making 10 saves for Capital.
