COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a new school record of 13 made 3-pointers, the Capital University women's basketball team let a late lead slip and fell 69-65 at the hands of the No. 13 ranked Ohio Northern Polar Bears.
The 13 made threes broke the previous single-game record of 12, made vs. Carnegie Mellon in the 1998-99 season. Capital's hot shooting from beyond the arc came courtesy of five different players.
Bri O'Connor led the way with four made triples,
Maddi Weiland made three, and two each from
Demi Brewer,
Laney Murphy and
Jenna Horsley.
Today's result slips Capital back to 12-9 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. On the flipside, ONU improves to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Through the first quarter, the Comets held the upper hand with a 17-12 lead after one. A 7-2 run midway through the quarter helped Capital swing a 7-2 score to a 9-9 score. There, Capital then connected on a 3-pointer from
Laney Murphy and then a layup and 3-pointer from
Maddi Weiland created some separation before the first break.
In the second quarter, the Comets caught fire and exploded for 25 points, out-pacing ONU's 17. At the end of the stanza, the Comets carried a 42-29 lead to the locker room. The blistering quarter was spurred on by a flurry of offense and two huge 3-pointers from
Maddi Weiland. After those back-to-back treys by Weiland,
Bri O'Connor and
Demi Brewer each knocked one down, giving the Comets a sizeable lead.
In the third, Ohio Northern came out looking to get back into the game, eventually staying step-for-step with Capital, keeping the game at a 13-point spread.
The fourth quarter is where the Polar Bears got back to what they do best and that's make shots under pressure as a late onslaught was enough to help them to a come-from-behind win at the final buzzer.
