TIFFIN, Ohio – As the No. 6 seed in the OAC Tournament, the Capital University men's basketball team traveled to Tiffin, Ohio to battle with the No. 3 seeded Heidelberg University Student Princes for a third time this year on Tuesday night. There, despite some hefty pressure in the second half, the Comets fell by a final score of 80-71, ultimately ending their season.
Capital concluded the season with an overall record of 12-14 and finished 8-10 in the OAC. Heidelberg improves to 19-7 overall (13-5 OAC) and will now travel to the No. 2 seeded Mount Union on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets had some early momentum as they garnered the first bucket of the game courtesy of a 3-pointer off the hand of
Carter Combs. His bucket was then followed up by back-to-back layups from
Ryan Suever to give CU a 7-5 lead inside the game's first three minutes.
After that early lead, the Student Princes settled into their game plan and by the 12:07 mark of the first half established a lead they would defend for much of the rest of the game.
With Berg ahead 27-19, the Comets embarked on a 13-5 run that evened the score at 32-32 with 2:31 left in the half. That run was a total team effort, led largely by a pair of triples from senior
Griffin Doseck.
At 32-32, Heidelberg finished the first half on a 7-0 run, carrying a 39-32 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, Capital came back looking to find their way back into the game and immediately two layups by
Ryan Suever got the team back into it. After a layup from Berg's Isaiah Young, Suever dispatched a 3-pointer that really made things interesting.
His flurry of seven quick points was followed up by a three point play from
Griffin Doseck that got the Comets in front 42-41. That slight advantage was then exchanged briefly with the Student Princes until a 3-pointer from
Tre Hammond put Cap ahead 50-49.
Two possessions later, Heidelberg would kickstart a 13-2 run that would ultimately seal the deal as the Comets would fail to cut back into that spread.
