WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University football program saw three of their own named All-Ohio Athletic Conference on Monday morning. Earning the recognition for the Comets were seniors
Mike Elmore and
James Curtis as well as sophomore
Nate Younker.
Elmore was voted to the second team as a wide receiver, marking his first postseason accolade. Curtis and Younker were also both first time postseason honorees and were chosen to the Honorable Mention team – Curtis as a linebacker and Younker as a wide receiver.
In 2023, Elmore finished second on the team in both catches and receiving yards, ending with 32 receptions for 603 yards. He also finished with five receiving touchdowns. Notably, this season, Elmore caught two touchdown passes in the Battle for the Oar victory over Otterbein on Homecoming. His second touchdown of the day came with just 27 seconds left on the clock after he had just made a 42-yard catch in triple coverage on a 4th-and-17 conversion one play prior to the game-winning score.
Curtis had a breakout year in 2023, making a team-leading 105 tackles. The total placed him second in the conference in total tackles. He added eight tackles for a loss, three sacks, an interception, three pass break-ups, a QB hurry, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Curtis had several notable games this season, highlighted by his 14-tackle performance in the win over Otterbein that saw him named the OAC's Defensive Player of the Week as well as to the D3football.com National Team of the Week. He also set a new career-high in tackles with 18 vs. Marietta late in the season.
Younker was Capital's leading receiver in every category this season, making 34 catches for 660 yards and six touchdowns. He also recorded the longest completion of the season – a 52-yarder. Younker eclipsed the 100-yard mark twice this season at Baldwin Wallace and at Heidelberg. Against BW, Younker reeled in six catches for 155 yards and two scores, while at Heidelberg he caught seven passes for 107 yards and a score.
As a team, Capital finished the 2023 season with a 1-9 record which included a 1-8 mark in the OAC, defeating Otterbein 35-31 on Homecoming weekend.
