Women’s Basketball Gets First Win on the Road

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 OAC) traveled to the campus of Kenyon (0-3, 0-0 NCAC) on Wednesday night for a midweek matchup. The Comets would come away with their first notch in the win column this season, 64-48.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital came out of the gates hot, going on a 20-4 run in the first nine minutes. The Comets went 5-for-13 from the field with three three-pointers. Samaree Perkins led the scoring with six points. At the end of the first period, CU sat ahead 20-7. 

Cap kept it rolling in the second period, putting up 15 points and taking their lead to 38-27. Jenna Horsley was the leading scorer in the quarter with six points. Both she and Perkins had nine at the half. The Comets shot 7-for-12 (58.3%) as a collective in the second quarter while going 3-of-6 (50%) from three-point range. In total, the Purple and White held the lead for 18:21 (91.8%) of the first 20 minutes. 

Capital extended their lead by three in the third quarter, heading into the final 10 minutes up 50-36. Bri O'Connor came to life with seven points in the period. The Comets would close it out with 14 points in the fourth quarter to take home the 64-48 victory. Overall the Comets held the lead for 38:21, or 95.9% of the game.

THE NUMBERS
Samaree Perkins and Bri O'Connor were the leading scorers for Capital, both with 15 points. Perkins was the leading rebounder as well with eight boards, along with one assist. O'Connor accounted for six rebounds, four assists, and three assists. 

Laney Murphy finished with 14 points – including three three-pointers – while collecting three rebounds and two steals.

Jenna Horsley also found herself with three three-pointers, accounting for all of her nine points as she went 3-for-4 from the field, all of which were behind the arc. 

Maddi Weiland put in five points with six boards, one assist, and one steal.

The Comets will continue their road stint, traveling to Pittsburgh next for a matchup with Carnegie Mellon. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
