RICHMOND, Ind. – The Capital University men's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 OAC) faced off with fellow Comets on Saturday, in the form of Olivet (0-1, 0-0 MIAA). In the end, it would be the Purple and White would never surrender the lead, walking away with the 73-61 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital came out hot in the first half, going on a 24-6 run in the first nine minutes to take a commanding grip on the game. Overall, CU shot 19-of-29 or around 56% from the field in the first half.
Ryan Suever and
Carter Combs were the leading scorers for the Purple and White, Suever with 12 and Combs with 11. At the break it would be Capital with the 44-24 advantage.
Cap leaned on that 20-point halftime lead in the second period as – despite being outscored 37-29 in the final 20 minutes – CU still sat ahead by 12 when the final buzzer sounded, 73-61.
Justin Nixon was Capital's leading scorer in the second half with 10 points. Suever added nine to bring his total to 21, surpassing his previous career-high of 20.
THE NUMBERS
The Capital Comets shot 26-for-51 (51.0%) from the field, 7-of-23 (30.4%) from behind the arc, and 14-for-19 from the charity stripe. Cap scored 34 points in the paint and 17 off of turnovers. Capital pulled down a total of 35 rebounds, 12 of which were offensive and resulted in 17 second-chance points. CU also had 20 assists, four steals, and two blocks.
Ryan Suever was the game's leading scorer with a career-high 21 points off of 8-for-12 shooting and 5-of-6 on free throws. He had three rebounds and one assist as well.
Justin Nixon was next in points with 12 coming from a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. He also pulled down five boards, made two blocks, and had one assist and one steal.
Carter Combs tied his career-high of eight assists while also scoring 11 points, including three three-pointers. He got five rebounds as well.
McKane Finkenbine and
Baden Forup each had 9 points. Forup found an additional six rebounds while Finkenbine added five assists and one steal.
