COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University football dropped a difficult game to the No. 14 ranked John Carroll Blue Streaks on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 63-17.
The loss drops Capital to 1-6 and 1-5 in the conference, while JCU improves to 6-1 and 6-0 in the OAC.
Capital got their scores spread throughout the game as the first points came on a 30-yard field goal try from
Tyler Terrell in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, quarterback
Ben Everson connected with
Nate Younker for 27 yards giving the Comets their first touchdown of the day.
After a scoreless third quarter from the Comets, Everson took the Comets back to the end zone in the fourth quarter. After a
Tyler Terrell punt for 39 yards, JCU return man Daniel Gallagher Jr. muffed the fair catch, allowing
Nate Younker to fall on the loose ball. On the very next play, Everson aired it out to
Mike Elmore in the corner of the end zone for a 33-yard score.
THE NUMBERS
Ben Everson threw for 179 yards, going 14-for-22 on pass attempts. He threw two touchdowns and one interception.
Ben Owens was good on his one pass attempt for eight yards.
Drew Montoya recorded 48 yards receiving on two catches.
Nate Younker added 42 yards and a touchdown on three catches.
Bennett Zerby caught four passes for 38 yards.
Mike Elmore made his one catch count, going for a 33-yard touchdown.
Albree Grose,
Colton Yeager,
Kassim Johnson and
William Adkins all recorded catches as well.
Albree Grose was the go-to running back, taking 12 carries for 50 yards.
Mir Dewberry,
Da'Vaughn Bufford, Trevor Shoot,
Kassim Johnson and Everson combined for 16 rush attempts.
In defense,
Tyson Shutler had a day, making 13 tackles, including one for a loss of four yards.
James Curtis also put in a shift with 12 tackles.
Declan McAdams made seven stops and had a pass breakup.
Bryson Roberts,
Nick Fisanick and
Marvin Jean-Denis each made six stops.
Nate Younker made one fumble recovery for the Comets on a muffed fair catch by the Blue Streaks. The play set up
Mike Elmore's 33-yard touchdown reception on the very next play.
In special teams action,
Tyler Terrell was good on a 30-yard field goal and was solid on two PATs. He added six punts for 265 yards – an average of 44.2 yards per punt.
Bennett Zerby took seven returns for 119 yards.
Ty Boughman had four kickoffs for 235 yards.
MILITARY APPRECIATION
The game served as the inaugural Military Appreciation game at Bernlohr Stadium with Capital University's ROTC program and the Ohio Army National Guard being heavily involved in the ceremonies.
Prior to gates opening the National Guard stationed two vehicles on site, one interactive vehicle in the tailgating parking lot and another inside the stadium under the scoreboard.
Before kickoff, the Ohio Army National Guard conducted an Oath of Enlistment for 11 men and women who committed to service in the National Guard today. The Oath of Enlistment was followed by recognition of three Capital University Public Safety Officers who have prior military service. These recognitions were followed by ROTC Cadet Ben Gilleland singing the National Anthem on field – the first live anthem performance at a Capital sporting event in several years. Additionally, National Guard Brigadier General Matthew Woodruff conducted a ceremonial coin toss.
At halftime, Capital's ROTC program recognized their senior ROTC cadets for their service to the program over the years.
