NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team used a strong second half to blow past Muskingum University on Wednesday evening by a final score of 5-2.
The Comets improve their record to 7-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the OAC. The win for Cap marked their first since September 23rd. Muskingum slips back to 3-9-1 and 1-3 in the conference.
The Comets got on the board in the 16th minute as
Devon Hess received a pass from
Keegan Reese and swiveled to send a left footed shot on target. His shot was deflected past the Muskie goalie to mark Hess' fourth goal of the season. The assist for Reese was his first of the year.
The 1-0 lead would hold for Cap as they carried the advantage to the break, despite out-shooting the Muskies 15-6 in the half.
Out of the break, the Comets wasted no time in adding to their lead however, thanks largely to the play of
Jacob Deever. First, Deever scored his first goal of the year in the 49th minute and then just 31 seconds later, he assisted on
Zade Awad's team-leading sixth goal of the season. The quickfire attack quickly made the score 3-0 in favor of Cap.
Muskingum got one back in the 57th minute as Mahfuz Yakubu scored the Muskies' first of the game off an assist from Fady Makram.
The Comets got back on track with a goal from
Jack Kossoudji in the 61st minute. His goal marked his sixth goal of the season.
Zade Awad was credited with the assist on the play.
Muskingum answered back in the 66th minute as Yakubu grabbed his second of the game.
Despite allowing the goal, Capital scored just 59 seconds later as
Jarrett Puckett finished his fourth of the season off another assist from Awad.
Connor Sexton got the start for Capital and made two saves in the net for Capital.
Kellen Sargent made his season debut, playing the final five minutes of the match, but did not record a save.
Overall, Capital took 26 shots to Muskie's 11, including a 14-4 edge in shots on target.
