Men’s Basketball Starts 2023 off Strong

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Capital University men's basketball team returned to the court on Monday following their midseason winter break, playing visitor to Adrian College in their first contest of the new year. It was all glad tidings on the road as the Comets downed the Bulldogs by a score of 86-70.

Capital moves past .500 to 6-5 on the season, remaining 2-2 in conference play. 

Adrian falls to 3-8 overall.


HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was nothing short of a back-and forth affair. The largest lead on either side was six points, held by Capital twice in the period. The last time being just a minute before halftime. When the clock finally struck 0.0, the Comets maintained a four-point lead, 39-35.

The second half was when Cap really got rolling. The Comets nearly 70% from the field in the second set of 20 minutes, knocking down six three-pointers. Points off turnovers (25) and bench points (27) truly proved to be the difference maker as Capital mounted a 23-9 run in the final 6:15 to cruise to a comfortable 16-point win, 86-70. 


THE NUMBERS
There were five Comets in double-digits in the contest. Kaleb Crawford led the squad with 16 points. He was joined by Dom Moegerle with 15, Carter Combs and Joe Thompson with 12, and McKane Finkenbine with a career-high 13. 

Crawford went 5-of-6 from the field including 2-for-2 from three-point range. He also added seven rebounds and three assists to his totals. 

Moegerle shot 6-of-10, adding four assists, three rebounds, and two steals as well.

Combs went 5-for-11 from the field with two three-pointers, having an additional three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. 

Thompson totalled four assists and two rebounds as well along with his scoring output.

Finkenbine had himself a career day shooting 5-of-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from behind the arch, along with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
