TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team was back on the road yet again on Wednesday night, following a short, one game home stand. The opponent for the night's contest was the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. In Tiffin, the Comets took care of business and rode the wave of yet another 20+ point night from
Bri O'Connor en route to a 71-44 win.
The result improves Capital's record to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the OAC. The Berg drops to 2-12 and 0-7 in conference.
Despite O'Connor's dominant night offensively, the day had a milestone moment for the Comets'
Laney Murphy who scored her 500th career point in the win. Just a year and a half into her career, Murphy – who finished with 10 points tonight – has scored double digits in 30 of her 39 career games. She now sits at 505 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a brief back-and-forth saw Heidelberg capture an early 6-4 lead, the Comets set sail on an 11-0 run that truly turned the tides and put all the momentum in favor of the visitors. O'Connor got her game going during the run as she was responsible for seven points and an assist in the burst of offense.
The Comets held that nine point lead at 20-11 to end the first quarter an after an evenly played second quarter, they led 31-22 at the halftime break.
In the third, CU removed all doubt from the game, bursting out to a 20-point lead heading to the final period of play. O'Connor led the way in the frame for Capital again, but several Comets got in on the action as
Samaree Perkins,
Maddi Weiland,
Maddie Dougoud,
Jenna Horsley and
Demi Brewer all chipped in points.
In the fourth quarter, Capital maintained the lead and removed all doubt from the score as they increased their advantage to as many as 27 points.
Kaylee Cyphers scored a cool four points in that stanza to push the Comets across the finish line with a flourish.
