Men's Basketballs Loses Hold on Heidelberg

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team played the final game of a three-game home stand on Wednesday night, hosting the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. The Comets kept it close for the majority of the game but a strong second half from the Student Princes proved to be too much and Capital would end up falling 72-84.

Capital drops to 7-7 on the year, with a 3-4 record in OAC play.

Heidelberg moves to 11-3 overall and 6-1 within the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Throughout much of the first half, the game looked like it could go either way. Both teams took their fair share of the lead, trading places every once in a while. In fact, the lead changed seven times in the first twenty minutes and would only swell to a maximum of six points. Heading into the half, the scoreboard favored the visitors 36-31.

The second half is when things started to spread out a bit. Fast-paced play led to multiple scrambles for the ball and, unfortunately for the Comets, those scrambles often ended with a Heidelberg basket at the other end. While Capital did do their fair share of climbing back into the game, it was just not enough to overcome the deficit, and the Comets would fall 72-84.

THE NUMBERS
Griffin Doseck led the team with a double-double, dropping 12 points and collecting 10 rebounds. The senior forward shot 4-for-8 from the field and also picked up two assists.

Kaleb Crawford and Dom Moegerle followed closely behind, each with 11 points. Crawford was a force elsewhere on the court as well, dropping five dimes, grabbing five rebounds, and making two steals. Moegerle had himself a block party, shutting down three shots, including one particularly loud block off the backboard in the second half. He also collected four rebounds, and made two assists and one steal.

Justin Nixon and Tre Hammond then tied for fourth in scoring, each with eight. Nixon also controlled three boards and made one steal. Hammond notched two three-pointers in his performance, shooting 2-for-3 from downtown to increase his conference-leading three-point shooting percentage on the year.
