Men’s Soccer Escapes With a Draw on Last Minute Goal

HANOVER, Ind. – On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University men's soccer team played on the road at Hanover College in Indiana. Despite garnering a third minute lead, the Comets were forced to settle for a draw in the 90th minute on Devon Hess's last minute strike.

The Comets now move to 1-4-1 on the season, while Hanover settles into a 2-4-1 record.

Freshman Jacob Deever got things going early for Capital in just the third minute of action. He netted his third goal on the season off a feed from Veron Fongeh. The assist from Fongeh was his first goal contribution of the season.

Despite the early lead, the hosts leveled the match on 13 minutes through Joao Domenici.

The even scoreline carried through to the 53rd minute where Hanover would take a lead. This time Coghlin Kumler finished off a pass from Xander Ochsner to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

When it looked like the Comets were destined for another frustrating narrow loss, Devon Hess cleaned up a loose ball in the box with just 22 seconds left on the clock. The Comets swung in a free kick that was bobbled by the Hanover goalie. The loose ball fell right to the foot of Hess who had just enough on it to cross the line before a desperation clearance, tying the game at 2-2. The goal was Hess's team-high fourth of the campaign.

In the match, Capital held the upper-hand in shots taking 14 shots with nine finding the target, while the Panthers managed just eight shots. The biggest difference is that Hanover's two shots on goal found the back of the net.

Jack Kossoudji led the team with three shots, while Josiah Campbell, Veron Fongeh, Jacob Deever and Alex Moore each had two shots apiece.

The opposing goalkeepers duo of Luciano Salemi and Aaron Masri combined to make seven saves in the Hanover net.
