DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team took the short trip north to the campus of Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Comets would come home empty handed as the Battling Bishops took the game, 1-0.
The result pushes Cap back to a 1-5-1 record at the end of non-conference play.
It was not a quiet game by any means. However, whatever Capital put forth in terms of offense, OWU just straight up put forth more. The Comets were outshot on the day 33-12 in total and 15-6 in terms of shots on goal. Normally, 12 shots with half of which being on target might fare pretty well for the Purple and White, but the day was just Ohio Wesleyan's day. And with the higher volume of shots, it would only make sense for there to be a higher number on the scoreboard.
The effort put forth by the Capital keepers to keep 15 shots out of the goal was phenomenal as
Connor Sexton and
Kellen Sargent combined to make 14 saves. Sexton took the lion's share, playing nearly 83 minutes and saving a dozen shots. The 12 saves by Sexton breaks the single-game mark of nine set by Justin Niswonger in 2016 and twice by Logan Wiedman in 2018. Sargent played the remaining sevenish minutes and made two saves.
The lone goal did not come until about halfway through the second half when OWU's Jaggar Brooker found the back of the net in the 71st minute.
