Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Sweeps For Second Straight Day

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – On Friday afternoon, the Capital University men's tennis team continued a busy three-day stretch, consisting of four matches, by sweeping their second straight opponent, this time by a score of 9-0 at Franciscan.

The Comets are now 2-0 in dual matches this fall and both have come via a shutout of their opponent. Capital defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene yesterday by a final of 7-0.

"What a great win for our team over an established program from Franciscan," said head coach Cody Hurley. "We came in feeling good about our level of play and that really showed in our performance. The most exciting part about this team is that we have so much room to grow and we can't wait to get back to work tomorrow morning against Geneva."

DOUBLES
The Comets burst out of the gates on fire as they swept all three doubles points up for grabs. The first match to conclude was #2 doubles as Jay Fortner and Alex Stout took care of Aidan Palladino and Benjamin Sabol in just 26 minutes, winning 8-2.

Soon after, the third pairing of Thomas Secrist and Spencer Surles defeated Jeremiah Greve and Leonardo Morella 8-3 to keep up the hot start.

The final doubles match to finish was the number one spot as Leonardo Abreu and Luke Ritchie eventually hung on to defeat Travis Mistry and Samuel Sabol by a score of 8-4. Abreu and Ritchie burst out to a 5-0 lead before hitting a bit of a challenge. Lucky for the Comets' top duo, they hung on to take the team point.

SINGLES
The Comets continued their hot start in singles play by taking all six matches in straight sets.

Thomas Secrist got the first singles point defeating Hecton Callahan 6-0, 6-0 in just 33 minutes of play.

Jay Fortner then finished off his opponent in Samuel Sabol at #2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.

Shortly after Fortner's match-clinching win, Luke Ritchie finished off his match with Aidan Palladino 6-0, 6-0.

In quick succession, Alex Stout defeated Leonardo Morella and Spencer Surles took down Benjamin Sabol to put Cap ahead 8-0. Stout won his match 6-4, 6-1, while Surles took his 6-2, 6-4.

The final match of the day to finish was Leonardo Abreu's hard-fought triumph at #1 singles. He fell in a 3-0 hole to Travis Mistry in the first set, but stormed back to claim the opener 7-5. After the difficult start, Abreu once again dug down and edged Mistry in the second set 6-4. The point from Abreu polished off the second sweep in as many days for the Comets.
