Women’s Soccer Opens Home Schedule with Win over Dickinson

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team was back in action for the second time this weekend with a Sunday noontime match with Dickinson College. It was an ugly day weather-wise as the teams played much of the game in a downpour of rain. Ball control was an issue for both squads due to the slick surface of the turf at Bernlohr Stadium. In the end, the Comets battled it out and secured a 1-0 win over the Red Devils.

The win makes back-to-back for the Comets as they look to extend the streak going forward. CU now stands at 2-1-0 overall.

Dickinson drops to 2-2-0.

FIRST HALF
Overall, the game went by quickly and quietly. Possession was hard to come by and split pretty evenly between the two sides. For the most part, the ball was passed around or changed hands in the midfield. This resulted in a lack of scoring chances with neither side able to string together opportunities to push up towards goal. Capital took five shots in the period but none were able to break through into the goal. On the defensive side, the Comets only allowed three shots with the same story. At the half, the game was still knotted at 0-0.

SECOND HALF
It was a similar story in the second half, but things were starting to lean Capital's way. An increased presence in the attacking zone led to more traffic around the Dickinson goal, with any push feeling like it could end up with the ball in the net. However, the first 30 minutes of the half went by without any fireworks. It wasn't until the 77th minute that Cap was able to make a move.

It was the third and final Capital corner kick of the half, and sixth of the game. The kick was taken by Madeline Woodruff and found the head of Aaliyah Brletic who sent it bouncing off the ground, then off the keeper's hand's, and finally finding its way into the goal for a Purple and White score.

From then on, it was Capital on the defensive end making plays and pushing the ball out of the defensive zone to keep Dickinson from equalizing. While there were some breaks to attack, the Comets' main focus was to keep the lead and let the clock run out. Ultimately, that goal was achieved and the final whistle blew to give the Purple and White their second win of the season and their first at home, 1-0.

THE NUMBERS
Capital took the majority of the shots in the game, firing off nine attempts. Five of those attempts reached their target. The Comets received six corner kicks in the game, with the final one leading to their lone goal.

Senior Aaliyah Brletic scored her first goal of the season. The goal came off of her only shot in the game.

Madeline Woodruff was credited with the assist on the Brletic goal after firing the ball in from the corner. It is her first assist of the season and ties her with Catherine Zugaro for the team lead. Woodruff also took one shot on goal.

Grace Estes, Avery Hart, and Zugaro each took two shots for the Comets and they each had one on target.

Sophia Leonetti took the lone other shot for the Purple and White.

Lauren White returned to the goal for Capital and played the full 90 minutes. She faced a total of six shots and made four saves. Her record now stands at 1-1-0.

THE OPPONENT
Dickinson recorded six shots, four on target.

Sophia Kuvalich was in goal for the Red Devils, playing the full 90. She made three saves.
