Men’s Lacrosse Wraps Up 2022 Campaign in Berea

BEREA, Ohio – On Wednesday evening, the Capital University men's lacrosse team ventured up to the greater Cleveland area to battle with the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. There, the No. 1 seeded BW exploded out to a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back, taking the final score by a margin of 15-5. 

With the loss, Capital concludes the season 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the OAC. Under the direction of first year head coach AJ Smith the Comets played solid lacrosse all season and had several players step up when needed most to contribute heavily to the program's success. Additionally, the team will send off 10 seniors and graduate students next season who left a valuable mark on the program's history. 

In tonight's game, Capital was led offensively by two goals from Mason Spaulding, joined by one goal each from Doc Crimmel, Jack Scharner, and Nathan Montgomery. One assist went to each Scharner and Montgomery. 

Defensively, Jack Conley had a day with two caused turnovers and six ground balls, while Lake Harris had five ground balls off 13 faceoff wins. 

Sam McInturf made 12 saves in the cage. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital found themselves trailing 6-0 with 9:51 remaining in the second quarter, and finally got their first strike off a tally from Mason Spaulding. Spaulding took a feed from Jack Scharner for the goal. 

The Yellow Jackets scored the next four in the game to push their lead out to 10-1. There with 8:05 left in the third quarter, Nathan Montgomery netted an unassisted tally to move the score to 10-2. 

Again, the Yellow Jackets rattled off the next five goals to put the insurance on the game going ahead 15-2. The Comets then scored the final three goals with under two minutes left in the game to put a positive end to a difficult contest. The goals were scored in quick succession by Jack Scharner, Doc Crimmel, and Mason Spaulding

THE OPPONENT
Baldwin Wallace had four scores from both Hunter Boehm and Kyler Byerly to lead the offense. Luke Demmerle led the defense with six ground balls. Joe Storner made seven saves in the cage.
